The 250th Anniversaries
From 1775 through 1777, a revolutionary fervor gripped this region which saw the creation of the Republic of Vermont, and played a pivotal role in removing British control of the fledging United States of America. The first months of 1775 saw the Westminster Massacre, the seizure of Fort Ticonderoga, and the first Dorset Conventions. The following year, the Continental Congress declared Independence from Britain, and Vermont decided to declare independence from everyone. Finally, in 1777, the Republic of Vermont became established, Fort Ticonderoga was re-taken, settlers fled to the safety of Bennington, which the British tried to capture, but lost in the nearby Battle of Bennington. These were eventful years, and these celebrations will not only commemorate the well-known events, but dig deeper into the lesser-known lives and their trials and triumphs.
This website will track the events commemorating that ferment, not only in the shires of Bennington County, but in neighboring areas, as well. These events will include reenactments, school curricula, lectures, tours, videos, and even a book club; commemorations and reflections on the past.
Historians, educators, business leaders and others comprise the Bennington 250 Anniversary Committee, a volunteer group dedicated to highlighting the transformational historical happenings in the crucial years of 1775 - 1777.
We invite you to join us on this adventure of discovery.
What are we commemorating?
2025-2027
Yes, we are commemorating the 1776 semiquincentennial of the Declaration of Independence (along with the entire United States). However our story does not begin, or end, in 1776! We begin our signature anniversaries in 2025 and continue through 2027. We also will be doing smaller 250th celebrations each year in the lead-up to 2025.
A spotlight on under- represented stories
An anniversary is not always a cause for celebration. For native Americans, for peoples of color, the story is much more complex. We want to use the 250th anniversaries to highlight those under-represented stories as we journey together to fulfill the ideals of a the country we imagined 250 years ago, and are still struggling to realize.
A “brave little state”
Our goal is to commemorate Vermont’s story. From the Hampshire Grants, to the first democratic constitution on the continent, to our extraordinary role in the Revolutionary War, culminating in the Campaign of 1777 and the Battles of Hubbardton and Bennington.
